Founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921 — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023. Famous for open-air classes, Kala Bhavan murals, Sangit Bhavan and its unique pan-Asian architecture.
The golden Sonajhuri forest in red-earth Khoai ravines. Every Saturday, the open-air Haat draws Baul singers, Santhali dancers and local artisans selling handmade crafts — a truly unforgettable experience.
Preserves Tagore's manuscripts, paintings, medals, and rare letters including his meetings with Einstein, Gandhi, and Hellen Keller. His passport — a handwritten letter — is an extraordinary exhibit.
The Kopai River immortalised in Tagore's poem flows through dramatic red laterite ravines. The Khoai landscape at sunset is one of Bengal's most hauntingly beautiful natural sights.
Five homes built and lived in by Tagore — Udayana, Konark, Shyamali, Punascha and Udichi. Shyamali's Barabudur-style exterior with Nandalal Bose student murals is the architectural highlight.
Debendranath Tagore's ethereal prayer hall — walls of multicoloured Belgian glass creating a light show at every hour. The "deity-less temple" is the spiritual heart of Shantiniketan.
India's finest fine arts institution, established 1919. Murals by Nandalal Bose, sculptures by Ramkinkar Baij, and the iconic coal-tar Kalo Bari make this campus a living artwork.
Bengal's most celebrated cultural fair held every December. Three days of Baul music, tribal dance, handicrafts, and Rabindra Sangeet — the cultural highlight of the year.
The sacred Alstonia grove where Debendranath Tagore discovered Shantiniketan. The adjacent tranquil deer park has been a morning walk favourite for over a century.
Freedom-fighter sanctuary turned thriving craft cooperative on the Kopai riverbank. Famous for Birbhum leather goods, painted cloth and exquisite local handicrafts.
"Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; where knowledge is free — into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake."— Rabindranath Tagore · Nobel Laureate
Shantiniketan — "Abode of Peace" — was named by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore in 1863. His son Rabindranath transformed this quiet Bengal village into one of the world's great cultural capitals. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 2023.
Maharshi Debendranath Tagore leases 20 acres, builds a guest house and names it "Shantiniketan" — the Abode of Peace. The sacred Chhatim trees mark the founding spot forever.
A 17-year-old Rabindranath visits with his father. The red-earth landscape and open skies shape his lifelong philosophy of nature-centred learning.
Rabindranath founds the Brahmacharyashrama with just five students — open-air classes, ancient Gurukul values, a radical new vision for Indian education.
Tagore wins the Nobel Prize in Literature. He donates the entire prize money to Shantiniketan, inviting artists and scholars from across the world.
Tagore establishes Visva-Bharati — the "world university" dedicated to the unity of Eastern and Western thought and the universal brotherhood of humanity.
An Act of Parliament declares Visva-Bharati a Central University. Famous alumni include Satyajit Ray, Amartya Sen, and Indira Gandhi.
Shantiniketan is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List — recognising its Outstanding Universal Value as a unique centre of pan-Asian art, architecture and education.
